Possibilities and Pitfalls of Digital Technologies for Refugee Resettlement and Belonging
How are digital technologies shaping refugee resettlement, connection, and belonging?
Join us for a hybrid seminar hosted by the Public Policy Institute (PPI) and the Centre for Asia Pacific Refugee Studies (CAPRS) at the University of Auckland, where two leading researchers explore how refugee communities are using digital tools in powerful, and sometimes unexpected, ways.
Tuesday 6 May 2025 | 4:00–5:00 PM NZT
In-person: B201, Room 726, University of Auckland
Online: Zoom – https://lnkd.in/ggAFKBig
Hybrid event – all welcome
What to expect:
Professor Jay Marlowe (University of Auckland) shares how refugees use ICTs and social media to sustain transnational ties, negotiate belonging, and bridge distances between ‘here’ and ‘there’ in an unevenly mobile world.
Dr. Charles Martin-Shields (German Institute of Development and Sustainability) presents research from Bogotá, Nairobi, and Kuala Lumpur, showing how refugees self-organise their digital inclusion and build networks of self-reliance in urban settings.
This session offers unique insights into refugee-led digital practices and the evolving relationship between technology, mobility, and place.
Free and open to all. We look forward to welcoming you in person or online.
