MINISTER FOR TRADE AND INVESTMENT

Todd McClay is the Minister of Agriculture, Minister of Forestry, Minister for Hunting and Fishing, Minister for Trade, and Associate Minister of Foreign Affairs. He has been the MP for Rotorua since 2008.

Todd held several Ministerial roles in the Fifth National Government with portfolios including Trade, State-Owned Enterprises and Revenue.

Todd has previously been a diplomat and was the Cook Islands and Niue Ambassador to the European Union. He has worked in business in Europe as well as government and public relations internationally.

Hon Nicola Grigg

MINISTER OF STATE FOR TRADE

Nicola Grigg is the Minister of State for Trade and Investment, Minister for Women, Associate Minister of Agriculture (Horticulture) and Associate Minister for ACC. Nicola has been the MP for Selwyn since 2020.

Nicola was born and raised on the family sheep and beef farm in Mt Somers, and studied at the New Zealand Broadcasting School, graduating with a Degree in Broadcast Communications and Diplomas in Television and Radio News.

Nicola has worked as a reporter and newsreader and was a press secretary for Sir Bill English during his tenure as Minister of Finance, and Prime Minister. Following that, Nicola worked with a wide range of agri-businesses in export marketing and business development.

HE Lawrence Meredith

AMBASSADOR OF THE EUROPEAN UNION

H.E. Mr Lawrence Meredith arrived in New Zealand in January 2024 as the European Union Ambassador. He has built a career in international relations and development cooperation. With a strong foundation in modern languages, holding a First Class Honours B.A. in Russian and French from The Queen’s College, Oxford, Meredith is multilingual with proficiency in English, French, Russian, Spanish, German, and Italian.

Starting his career in 1993, Lawrence Meredith focused on economic and development cooperation with nations formerly part of the Soviet Union. He was involved in programmes aimed at supporting independent media, human rights, and rural development, fostering democratic values and social progress.

In 2000, Lawrence shifted his focus to the European Union’s external relations sector, focusing on global partnerships within the former USSR & Balkans Directorate and subsequently for Training & Youth within the DG Education.

His trajectory within the European Commission is marked by leadership positions, including serving as Assistant to the Director-General of DG Enlargement. As Head of Unit for Policy & Strategy, he led efforts in shaping the EU’s enlargement strategy.

From 2015 to 2023, Lawrence Meredith served as the Director for Neighbourhood East & Institution Building at DG NEAR, managing relations and cooperation with Eastern Partnership countries. He also initiated the Young European Ambassadors programme, significantly enhancing the EU’s engagement with 900+ youth across the region.

Lawrence enjoys biking, birdwatching, and supporting Bradford City.

Matthew Li has served as the Counsellor for Trade Policy at the British Embassy Tokyo since August 2023. He leads the British Embassy’s Trade Policy team, which has responsibility for the UK-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), UK membership of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), and multilateral trade (G7, G20, World Trade Organisation), amongst other areas of UK-Japan bilateral trade policy cooperation. He also serves as the Counsellor for Trade Policy Asia-Pacific, supporting His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner Asia-Pacific on trade policy priorities across the APAC region. Prior to joining the British Embassy Tokyo, Matthew was a trade negotiator at the Department for Business and Trade, working on the UK’s free trade agreement negotiations with the United States (2020 – 2021), New Zealand (2021 – 2022), and India (2022-2023). He served at the Department for Exiting the European Union between 2017-2020, including as Private Secretary to the Secretary of State.

Matthew read Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Balliol College, Oxford University, graduating with First Class Honours. He held a Junior Policy Fellowship at Cambridge University’s Centre for Science and Policy between 2021 – 2023. He speaks English, German, Mandarin Chinese, and is learning Japanese.

COUNSELLOR, TRADE POLICY, BRITISH EMBASSY TOKYO

Vangelis Vitalis is MFAT Deputy Secretary, Trade and Economic. He is New Zealand’s Chief Negotiator and has led the conclusion of negotiations for the New Zealand European Union Free Trade Agreement (EUNZFTA), the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for the Trans Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA) and the Malaysia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (MNZFTA). He was also a member of the negotiating teams for the New Zealand-China FTA and the P4 Agreement.

Vangelis was also the APEC Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) Chair for New Zealand’s host year in 2021 which established the APEC Aotearoa Plan of Action – APEC’s programme of work for the coming two decades. Vangelis was also the CPTPP SOM4 Chair for New Zealand’s host year in 2023 which oversaw the accession of the United Kingdom and the establishment of the Auckland Principles which guide and inform the process for CPTPP members to consider accession requests.

Prior to taking up his role in Wellington in 2017, Vangelis was New Zealand’s Permanent Representative (Ambassador) to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in Geneva where he chaired the agriculture negotiations in a personal capacity. In this role he helped draft the text of the historic Nairobi WTO Ministerial Decision to eliminate agricultural export subsidies. Vangelis has also been New Zealand’s Ambassador to the European Union and NATO in Brussels and has had postings to Canberra and Moscow.

In his role as Deputy Secretary, Vangelis also had management oversight of the conclusion of negotiations for the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, the UK-NZ FTA, the FTA upgrades with China and ASEAN. In addition, Vangelis has helped design and implement the advancement of New Zealand’s strategy of concerted open plurilateralism, including through the conclusion and expansion of the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement, the Agreement on Climate Change and Sustainable Development and the Indigenous Peoples’ Economic Cooperation and Trade Arrangement. Vangelis was also involved in the establishment and expansion of the Inclusive Trade Action Group and New Zealand’s membership of the Global Trade and Gender Arrangement.

Vangelis has worked outside the Ministry including in the Secretariat of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). He is a past member of the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Future Council on Trade, is currently a member of the WEF International Trade and Investment Action Group and is also on the Steering Committee for the WEF Climate Trade Zero initiative. He has chaired in a personal capacity the OECD Committee on Trade and the Environment. the OECD Global Forum on Trade and Climate Change and is currently the New Zealand Envoy for the Small Advanced Economies’ Initiative.

HEAD OF TRADE POLICY, HINRICH FOUNDATION

Dr. Elms is Head of Trade Policy at the Hinrich Foundation in Singapore. Prior to joining the Foundation, she was the Executive Director and Founder of the Asian Trade Centre (ATC). She was also President of the Asia Business Trade Association (ABTA) and the Board Director of the Asian Trade Centre Foundation (ATCF).

Dr. Elms serves on the board of the Trade and Investment Negotiation Adviser (TINA) at the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia Pacific (UNESCAP). She was on the International Advisory Council for APCO (2021-2023) and was a member of the International Technical Advisory Committee of the Global Trade Professionals Alliance and Chair of the Working Group on Trade Policy and Law. She was also a member of the World Economic Forum’s Trade and Investment Council for 2018-2020.

Prior to founding ATC/ATCF and the ABTA, she was head of the Temasek Foundation Centre for Trade & Negotiations (TFCTN) and Senior fellow of International Political Economy at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Dr. Elms received a PhD in political science from the University of Washington, an MA in International Relations from the University of Southern California, and bachelor’s degrees from Boston University.

She is the author of numerous articles, editor of several books, and regularly published the Talking Trade Blog. Dr. Elms also routinely appears on television and in major newspapers and magazines around the world to comment on trade and economic issues. Dr. Elms also makes frequent appearances at a range of global trade and economic workshops, conferences, capacity building sessions, and negotiations.

Executive Director, Institute for International Trade and Director, Jean Monnet Centre on Trade and Environment, The University of Adelaide

Peter is a board member of the Australian Services Roundtable; a Director of the Board of Trustees of the International Chamber of Commerce’s Research Foundation; non-resident senior fellow of the Brussels-based European Centre for International Political Economy; and Associated Researcher at the German Institute of Development and Sustainability. He has decades of experience working in the trade policy and negotiations trenches traversing multiple geographies, institutions, and topics. His career has spanned academic institutions, government, think tanks, and consultancies.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS FORUM

As the Executive Director of the New Zealand International Business Forum (NZIBF), I lead the Forum’s engagement on key trade and economic policy issues and represent the interests of internationally focused New Zealand businesses in dialogue with government, industry partners, and international stakeholders.

With nearly two decades of experience in international trade, foreign policy, and regional engagement, I bring expertise in geopolitics and the Indo-Pacific, with previous postings in Hong Kong, New York and in New Caledonia.

Nick Swallow

STRATEGIC ADVISORY LEAD, KPMG

Nick Swallow leads KPMG’s Strategic Advisory practice, providing commercial strategy advice to clients. Prior to KPMG, Nick was New Zealand Trade and Enterprise’s (NZTE) Trade Commissioner to the UK and Ireland, based in London. He supported New Zealand businesses through the trade matters brought about by Brexit and Covid, and to take advantage of the free trade agreement.

 Nick also spent three years in Brazil as Regional Director, leading NZTE’s Latin American team.

 Nick has extensive experience in International Trade, a strong understanding of the challenges faced by Kiwi businesses, and what it takes to be successful. 

 Nick holds a Master’s degree with distinction from the University of Cambridge, in Sustainability Leadership, a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and a Post-graduate Diploma in Business.

Justine Arroll

GENERAL MANAGER TRADE STRATEGY, FONTERRA

Justine is the General Manager of Trade Strategy at Fonterra, responsible for driving Fonterra’s engagement and advocacy on strategic global trade issues. A former New Zealand diplomat, Justine held a range of trade policy roles in MFAT prior to joining Fonterra five years ago, including offshore roles in the US and UK. She has also served as an advisor to the Minister of Trade.

A graduate of the University of Auckland in Arts and Law, Justine has been admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor to the High Court of New Zealand, and has completed studies in international law at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and Georgetown University in Washington DC.

Blanche is the Managing Director of Kai Ora Honey Ltd operating 2000 hives with her whanau in Te Taitokerau. Studying both Business & Project Management; Blanche has worked in various roles from Management, Bank Institutions, International Sales and Marketing. Blanche is a key member of Māori Mīere Working Group with The Crown Māori Economic Growth Partnership and Māori Engagement Focus Group for ApiNZ.  Blanche won The University of Auckland 2017 Young Māori Business Leader Award & was 1 of 5 finalists for Next Women Magazine 2017 Women of the Year Award in the Business & Innovation category, Innovation Northland Finalist with Westpac Business Excellence Awards 2018.

Hone McGregor

Hone McGregor is a highly experienced CEO, board director, and international consultant with over 30 years of leadership across public, private, and not-for-profit sectors.

Hone specializes in Māori business development, international trade, and research, holding several key governance roles in New Zealand.

He is Chair of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Te Taumata Māori Trade Advisory Group, advising on Māori interests in trade negotiations. Hone has served on the Trade for All Advisory Board and the National Research Priorities panel, supporting New Zealand’s trade and research strategies. Currently, Hone chairs Wakatū Incorporation and Kono LLP, exporting premium Māori food and beverage products to over 30 countries, including key markets across Asia.

Internationally, Hone has 14 years of experience as a social infrastructure consultant for the Asian Development Bank, working across North, South, and Central Asia, and contributing to civil society and government-led development initiatives. He also served as Aotearoa’s National Director for UNESCO’s UNEVOC, promoting vocational education in the Asia-Pacific region.

Hone’s leadership extends to Māori trade research and economic development through his work with the Tauhokohoko Research Steering Committee and the Federation of Māori Authorities (FOMA), as well as former chair of VSA.

He holds a Master of Education (Distinction) and a Bachelor of Arts from Victoria University of Wellington, and has previous experience as a pilot and primary school teacher. Hone is of Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Kere, Te Whānau-a-Apanui, and several other iwi.

Tina Wilson

NZTE, TAIWAN

Tina is the Director of Trade for New Zealand based in Taiwan, leading the New Zealand Trade Enterprise (NZTE) team. Before joining NZTE, she was the chief executive of investment firm IWIinvestor, providing wholesale, retail and private equity investment advisory services across New Zealand. 

Tina is experienced in investment, financial management, organisational strategy, internationalizing New Zealand business, business development, Indigenous business, and values-led business models. 

Tina has held many private and public governance roles. She is on the board of Massey University and is co-chair of Tupu Toa, an internship programme for Māori and Pacific professionals and corporate partners. She is also chair of Te Iwi o Ngati Tukorehe Trust, a tribally owned commercial entity.  

Tina holds commerce and Māori degrees from Massey and Victoria Universities. She is an alumna of Stanford University Executive School and of Te Hono — a collective of business leaders focused on shifting New Zealand’s primary sector from volume to value, through innovation and partnerships. Tina sits on the Te Hono governance team and is a director on the Australia New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Taipei. 

Tina is mother to four children and a proud Māori woman who hails from the tribes of Ngāti Tukorehe, Ngāti Raukawa, Muaupoko, Rangitane ki te Wairau, Ngāti Rarua Atiawa, Ngāi Tahu. She is a strong champion for diversity and inclusion and is a member of NZTE’s global governance committee, supporting D&I for all team members across 50 offices globally.

Daniel is NZTE’s Head of Focus Customers. He has held a number of leadership roles across NZTE, including Head of Manufacturing, Trade Commissioner for the UK and Ireland, Trade Commissioner and Consul General in Melbourne, and NZTE Private Secretary to the Minister for Economic Development.

Before joining NZTE, Daniel was involved in exporting fresh produce, with operations at ENZA and Global Fruits.

Professor Jennifer Curtin

WAIPAPA TAUMATA RAU, UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND

Jennifer Curtin is a Professor of Politics and Public Policy in the School of Social Sciences. She is also Director of the Public Policy Institute in the Faculty of Arts and Education at the University of Auckland. Her research and publications focus on Australian and New Zealand politics and policy, gender, policy analysis and political leadership, and the politics of sport.

Her research involves engagement with a range of government agencies, policy consultancies and non-profit organisations, and her publications appear in scholarly journals both internationally and in New Zealand, as books, editions, and peer reviewed reports. She regularly shares her findings with community organisations and the media, both in New Zealand and Internationally.

She is currently leading externally funded projects on the following topics: Gender Responsive Budgeting in New Zealand; the Gendered Effects of COVID19; Gender and Political Leadership at the Subnational Level in Australia and Canada; as well as being a Principal Investigator on the New Zealand Election Study. Jennifer teaches comparative public policy, lesson drawing and the gender analysis in the Master of Public Policy. She has supervised more than 30 PhD and Masters theses to completion, and currently she is the PhD Adviser for Public Policy.

Stephanie Honey

HONEY CONSULTING

Managing Director, Honey Consulting Ltd; Trade Adviser, New Zealand Asia Institute, University of Auckland; Alternate Member, APEC Business Advisory Council

Stephanie is an international trade policy consultant and former New Zealand trade negotiator of nearly twenty years’ standing. She holds a number of ongoing roles, serving as the Alternate Member and policy advisor to the New Zealand members of the APEC Business Advisory Council; Trade Adviser at the New Zealand Asia Institute at the University of Auckland; as Chair of the New Zealand Horticulture Export Authority, and she is the co-founder of Global Trade Insights, a business offering executive education in trade policy around the world. She is a member of Global Women New Zealand.

Stephanie works with governments, businesses, thinktanks and international institutions such as the OECD, APEC and the Asian Development Bank, and is a sought-after commentator on international trade issues. She is the author of numerous articles and book chapters, and makes frequent appearances at global trade and economic conferences and events. Stephanie has a particular focus on digital and services trade, regional economic integration in the Asia-Pacific, the WTO, agriculture and inclusion (particularly for women) in trade. Stephanie has previously served on the Advisory Board of the Centres for Asia-Pacific Excellence (a coalition of New Zealand universities) and the Executive Board of the TradeExperettes, a global social enterprise for women trade experts. She was the International Trade Policy Manager at Beef + Lamb NZ for a period, and worked on trade strategy for Fonterra.

Dr Antje Fiedler

Antje Fiedler (PhD, University of Auckland, NZ) is Senior Lecturer in Management specialising in entrepreneurship and International Business. She is also the Director of the New Zealand Asia Institute (NZAI) at the University of Auckland Business School. She is also a Director of the Board of the Small Enterprise Association of Australia and New Zealand (SEAANZ).

She is passionate about conducting research that is relevant to practice. Her research interests centre around how SMEs can productively engage with Asia. Her research has informed courses at the Business School (University of Auckland) and practitioner workshops around New Zealand. Antje has received three Excellence Awards for her Teaching at the University of Auckland Business School.

She is an Editor of Small Business Economics, an Associate Editor for the Journal of Small Business Management, and serves on the editorial boards for other leading international journals, including Critical Perspectives on International Business (editorial review board), and Review of Managerial Science (editorial board) and Small Enterprise Research (Deputy Editor). Her work has been published in international journals such as International Small Business Journal, Entrepreneurship & Regional Development, Human Relations, International Small Business Journal, Small Business Economics, European Industrial Relations Journal, and New Political Economy.

In November 2024, I was fortunate join Waipapa Taumata Rau University of Auckland as a Professor of Māori Management and Associate Dean Māori in He Manga Tauhokohoko Auckland Business School. My research, teaching, writing, and practice centres on Māori and Indigenous business philosophy and practice in multiple sites, sectors, and scales.
